Fumiko Takano “Friend(Otomodachi)”
高野文子「おともだち」
Hi. Call me Radar. Shoujo skeleton, MGS trash. Come howl into the void with me sometime, won't you? ;)
I found these at the back of the manga “Hanako to Guuwa no Tera.” It’s a manga about Japanese urban legends, so they included explanations of these legends of the back of each volume.
I’m very, very fond of urban legends in general, and Japanese ones are really interesting. Hopefully someone else finds this interesting, too!

Oimatsu, Kyoto: kami-no-ume (lit. god’s-‘ume [Japanese apricot/plum]’)
——–
‘Konashi’-type Japanese cake in the shape of 'ume’. Stuffed with strained-type white bean paste 'shiro-an’ and partly dusted with powdered (dried) rice cake called 'kori-mochi (lit. ice-rice cake)’. Oimatsu is a well-known confectionery store in Kyoto, offering a one-hour 'Japanese sweets making’ workshop. You may have a chance to make this 'feast’!
——–
Here, the word 'kami (god)’ suggests Tenjin (lit. sky-god), the god of knowledge and scholarship. Tenjin refers to Sugawara no Michizane (845-903), an aristocratic scholarly elite and poet deified by the then Emperor/government.* Many big shrines – e.g. Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto and Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in Fukuoka – were built and dedicated to the man as a god.**
——–
Sugawara no Michizane, who is one of the best-known historical figures in Japanese history, LOVED 'UME’ trees and their blossoms, composing some 'ume’-related excellent poems.*** The Japanese often associate Michizane=Tenjin with 'ume’ for that reason.
——–
* A human being can be a god in the Shinto religion.
** You may wonder why he was deified…it’s a curious story. Please take a look at e.g., Encyclopaedia Britannica: https://www.britannica.com/biography/Sugawara-Michizane .
*** Besides, there is a legend associated with his love of the plant, which is well known among Japanese people.

i just had the funniest experience in vr chat, i joined a random server and the one i joined had Japanese people so i waddled around in my goofy club penguin avatar that i have saved, after a while a guy walks up to me and clones my avatar so were both penguins then another guy shows up and clone my avatar

now keep in mind there only speaking Japanese i don’t know what they are saying, then another guy joins in, so i got a group of three penguin friends

we just waddle around and goof about, the one of them tries to talk to me, but not only do i not have a mic i also don’t speak Japanese, they figure out i don’t speak Japanese and start listing various places, they get the part of being European right, and after listing a lot of places they ask if im from the UK and when i nod they all just start cheering. after hanging out for a while one of them gets real close to me and whispers…

“penguin brothers forever”
